What We Do

Capacity building

PPI operational framework encompasses capacity building for Human Rights Defenders, Democracy movements and Public Servants with the aim of building their capacities to handle the threats that are triggered by their engagements for the defense of human rights and the promotion of peace.

Under PPI theory of change, the only way sustainability of interventions for HRDs and peace agents can be ensured is through equipping the local elites with relevant skills which would enable them serve their primary stakeholders better. The security of local elites committed to promote, defend and protect human rights is paramount to ensure effectiveness of their actions and improved human rights records in Africa in general and in the 10 Countries of primary interest to PPI in particular.

Advocacy and legal aid

PPI second operational orientation is Advocacy and Legal Aid, under which HRDs engaging in promoting peace, access to justice and strengthened institutions are supported to bring their human rights agendas to the attention of strong Civil Society Networks, Regional and Sub regional International Organizations as well as global institutions whose primary focus is human rights and peace.

In addition, PPI empowers Civil Society Organizations on United Nations Human Rights mechanisms such as the Universal Periodic Review process, Procedures to cease International Justice for human rights violation committed at national levels and the use of United Nations Special mechanisms for violations committed by various actors at the national levels.

Finally, PPI Advocacy and Legal Aid division provides close support to human rights defenders in conflicts with the law as a result of their human rights work. This particular support is done through pro-bono legal aid, mediation or special missions to actors whose statuses or positions risk to turn into a threats to local human rights defenders concerned.

Emergency protection

Through emergency protection, PPI rescues the HRDs whose coping mechanisms have failed to mitigate the threats from actors opposing their human rights activities, peace and democracy activism. The liaison officers of PPI work full time to ensure urgent interventions are posed in support of Human rights Defenders, Peace and Democracy activists at risk.

Research and Partnership building

PPI conducts research in Human Rights and Human Rights Defenders’ protection; Justice and Security Sector Reform and Public Policies.

It coordinates partnerships among Civil Society Organizations engaged in human rights and democracy movements related areas and promotes the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the 1998 United Nations Declarations on Human Rights Defenders and the 1951 refugee convention through technical support to Human Rights Defenders, Peace and democracy activists; campaigns for the protections of Human Rights Defenders engaged in the promotion of targets of sustainable Developpement Goals and other specific international human rights instruments.

 Integrated Peace Promotion

Through engagements with local organizations working on peace building and conflict transformation   in Countries in crisis, PPI provides opportunities for learning cooperation and protection skills among the organizations involved in peace recovery and human rights defending in most at risk areas, where human rights violations by non-state actors are rampant and where the amount of destabilization initiatives by negative forces with the aim of impeding the work of human rights monitors and peace watch dogs are real. The threats against peace ambassadors and human rights reports at the local level have reduced the progress of sustainable development goal sixteen with unbearable negative effects on human rights records of concerned countries in sub-saharan Africa.

PPI works also to build preventive and recovery capabilities of organizations created and led by the victims of war and which have human rights and humanitarian visions in host Country. Such interventions are conducted through digital peace tools, campaigns, leadership and social integration, domestic crime prevention and monitoring initiatives.
